Ayu fishing

A traditional fishing method born in Japan! We look forward to the challenge of anglers from all over the world!

What is Ayu fishing?

"Ayu no tomo-tsuri" is a unique Japanese fishing method that takes advantage of the strong territorial instincts of ayu. A live ayu is attached to the fishing line as bait, and by invading the ayu's natural territory, the angler attempts to drive the ayu away through hostile behavior. When the ayu rams into the line in an attempt to drive them away, the angler hooks the ayu and catches it. It is also highly competitive, with many tournaments held throughout Japan during the season to see who can catch the most.

Reasons for recommendation

Ayu fishing originated approximately 150 years ago, towards the end of the samurai era. Ayu are found only in parts of East Asia, including Japan, and are an annual fish that completes its life cycle in just one year. They are also an essential summer feature of Japanese food culture.

Using a nearly 10m long fishing rod, the angler skillfully manipulates the live ayu at the end of the rig, eliciting their fighting spirit. This fishing method, unique in the world, can only be enjoyed in Japan for a few months in the summer. Take this opportunity to try out this traditional Japanese fishing method.
